At this point, it is common knowledge that technology has taken over our lives in far more ways than we may realize. Our smartphones, our televisions, our computers, all three categories run the exact same apps that are actively ruining mine, and many other people’s lives.

In the digital age that we live in, technology serves to provide us what is most commonly known as dopamine. A sense of satisfaction in your mind when you scroll through social media, or even make your own posts on places like Instagram or BlueSky. Posts you will probably get recognition for. Or that two and a half hour YouTube video about the wildest of topics.

Whether we realize it or are aware of it or not, dopamine is quite literally everywhere around us these days. All because we all have a little computer with us at all times in our very pockets. Actively taking our attention away from our surroundings, not allowing ourselves to take a single moment of rest in our heads, and getting very easily distracted by every single notification we receive. At home, and in public. Ultimately resulting in us just not living in the moment anymore.

That said, something happened to me over a year and a half ago. When I started indulging myself into this cool hobby known as balisong flipping. Alongside other hobbies I already had, like cycling walking, and listening to music while reading. All of which are hobbies that allow me to completely disconnect from my technology. But balisong flipping, as well as a pawful of other videos on this platform, taught me something important that I will continue to live by for many more years to come. It taught me how to completely disconnect from the dopamine of social media. And to replace it with the utter wonder of boredom.
