I won’t lie to you. I often find it very tough to really accept, or process compliments from people. Especially when it’s about me, rather than my accomplishments, my grades in school, my job, or something like that. Because growing up, my family’s love was conditional, especially my father’s. Rarely did I ever get much praise for just being a good person, or did I get acknowledged for just being me. I had to be productive, and do something with my life, in order for them to even notice me.
This often leads to me getting really very emotional when someone tells me I’m special, that I mean a lot to them, that they see me as a role model, etc. And then go into detail about it. It always makes me feel overwhelmed, and I’m never sure how to process it at all. Which then results in me getting teary eyes. As you can imagine, I cry a fair bit because of this.
I don’t know if I will ever fully recover from that. But it is something that I’m starting to work on. And at the very least I know I won’t alone through it
