I have always had a very strong connection to wolves. Even as a kid, I had always thought about how life would have been had I been one of them. That thought somehow made me feel much more at peace with myself. Although I didn’t understand why yet.
One of the most magical memories that I have had involving wolves, is that I went to a zoo one day on a school excursion. I was wandering around the park, seperated from my classmates. I happen to walk past the wolf enclosure, inhabited by arctic wolves. One of them was sitting by the fence, and as I walked past him… He just started walking alongside me. With a bright smile, and a wagging tail too. While it doesn’t seem like much… For me it was an awakening moment. That was when I realised that maybe I don’t feel fully human… If that makes sense (it probably doesn’t).
The more time that past, the more I learned about wolves, the more I learned about myself, the more I started to relate to my wolf brothers and sisters. And just a few years ago, when I did a little bit of research, I learned about Therians. At which point, it finally clicked.
I have very subtly come out since then. My girlfriend being the first to know about this. Because she is literally the most open and supportive individual I know and trust. Then came my three best friends who I have known since elementary school. Followed by the rest of the world online. The only people I haven’t told yet are my own family. Because they are not the most respectful and/open people in the world. While I’m sure they will warm up to the idea of me identifying as a wolf, I am genuinely scared for the response they will give me initially. I also have not been super expressive about it at work, although I do subconsciously make wolf noises there, like little arfs, and the occasional howl. Because there nobody even remotely cares about how I express myself.
As much as I wish that I was born a full wolf… I also gotta admit, I am perfectly happy being the way that I am. The bond I have with wolves with truly unique, and regardless of how other people feel about me or how I see myself, no one will ever take that bond away from me. I am in no way ashamed of who I am, nor am I afraid to express that.
My name is Koen. I’m a wolf. And that’s how I see it.
Arf!
